We Are from the Future: A Psychologist’s Review

«We Are from the Future» or the Heirs of Courageous Defenders

A group of four «black archaeologists» are excavating near St. Petersburg, where fierce battles took place during the Great Patriotic War.

For these young people, the soldiers’ valor is just a number on a paycheck.

They are cynical, selfish, and mercenary individualists.

Their relationships are purely transactional. They have no names, only nicknames.

Their main goal is to earn as much as possible. Their highest value is material gain.

In a dugout buried by time, they discover five skeletons, weapons, and a safe containing documents. They celebrate their rich haul by drinking, and Cherep, like a soulless animal, aims his gun at a small nurse’s skull. Borman stops him from pulling the trigger.

Borman is a cold and distant leader. Confident in himself, arrogant, and dismissive, he knows his worth and gives his team strict orders. He maintains firm boundaries and doesn’t let anyone take advantage of him.

He is a historian par excellence, possessing encyclopedic knowledge, a phenomenal memory, a sharp mind, and intuition for where to dig. He spends all his time excavating.

His dream is to find a TT pistol and make a fortune. His obsession with this business cost him his expulsion from university.

Cherep is pumped up, underdeveloped, and cruel. He easily beats others without a trace of compassion.

His clothing resembles military attire, with a German eagle on his T-shirt and a German cross tattooed on his arm.

He belongs to a neo-fascist group that worships Hitler and reads his book *Mein Kampf*.

He is desperate to find an Iron Cross to show off to his comrades.

Spirit is a hippie with unkempt dreadlocks who dabbles in weed. He is submissive and easily influenced, holding no respect. Yet it turns out he is a brilliant musician. But he buries his talent for quick cash.

Chukha is soft and spineless. He has no opinions of his own. To decide how to react, he looks to Borman and obeys without question. His personality is codependent.

The guys promise an old woman they’ll find her son’s silver cigarette case and laugh at her naivety.

For this, fate sends them back to the bloody year of 1942…

It was a shock to find themselves naked in a foreign time, caught in a downpour and under the barrels of machine guns. The guys experience horror, bewilderment, rage, and hatred. Their emotions consume them, spinning them in a frenzied whirlwind.

The young men repeatedly try to return to their own time, but without success. This fills them with disappointment, despair, and helplessness. They mourn the loss of their carefree past lives.

Their next shock comes in the form of an enemy airstrike. Accustomed to peaceful, quiet lives, the guys scramble around in panic, searching for shelter. Spirit, losing his mind, buries himself in the trench, hiding from the nightmare unfolding around him. Terror freezes in his eyes. It feels like a monstrous dream. Outside, bombs explode and bullets fly. Inside, fear and HORROR consume him.

The guys are shaken by the death of a humane sergeant who had saved them from execution multiple times. This time, without hesitation, he gave his life to cover their retreat.

Dmitry Sokolov, whose cigarette case they had taken to the past, shielded their escape with his own chest after being wounded.

In 1942, the young men witness a simple life filled with hardship but also courageous and heartfelt.

A powerful awakening stirs within Sergei Filatov when he meets a wonderful girl. Nurse Nina is brave and fearless, crawling under gunfire to tend to the wounded on the front lines. She flatly refuses to leave for a rear hospital.

Kind, bold, warm-hearted, and talented, she sang to the soldiers during moments of peace.

Nina fell in love with Sergei. She unearthed true love deep within his soul.

His lust transformed into a tender, delicate feeling. His mechanical detachment and alienation crumbled in an instant. Sergei’s sensitive, living soul stirred and soared toward happiness.

The guys began to change:

Chukha declared his own desires and openly challenged Borman.

Cherep became kinder and more sensitive.

Spirit gained popularity among the soldiers for his artistic talent and love of music. He became warm and sociable, eagerly responding to the soldiers’ requests and playing for them at rest stops.

Lieutenant Demin tasked the guys with stopping the heavy fire from a pillbox. Vitalik Beroev—Chukha—honestly admitted, «I’m scared.» The lieutenant replied, «Everyone is scared, but we have to fight. Guys, you’re our only hope.» In Vitalik’s eyes, previously weak and cowardly, determination and courage shone. He set off on the dangerous mission.

The guys could now be called friends. At first, they were reprimanded by their commander for fighting: «How did you survive if you fight like dogs? This undermines unit cohesion. That’s treason to the Motherland. Court-martial.» Later, the guys realized they could only return home together. They gained names and faces. Shared misfortune united them, and when Vitalik was badly wounded, his friends carried him for many kilometers on their shoulders.

Upon returning to the present, the guys became real people.
